・ 「微粒子が付着しやすく、黒く汚れてきます」：　これは直訳すれば　〜 tends to attract fine particles, soiling the screen ですが、〜 attracts dust onto the screen でよいと思います。

２つ目の文章は下の訳文を見ていただければ、英訳時の考え方が分かると思いますので解説は省略します。

以上の語句と英文法の知識そして多少の英作文の経験から組み立てていくと、次のようになります。

これでももちろん英語国民に通じる英語であると思いますが、論理的構成 (intelligible) と読みやすさ (readable) という観点からもう少し考えてみましょう。

・ In econometric model analysis, since a model is set on the basis of econometric theory 　→　Since the models used in econometric model analysis are based on econometric theory.

・ 次の主節にあたるところは、it will often be possible to predict the sign and general size of the individual coefficients before they are actually estimated. と書くほうがよくなります。

・ 「そのような場合」というのは、和文ではすぐ前に「・・・・される場合がある」とあるためでしょうか、有効な表現法であるかもしれませんが、英文では、In such cases というのは、ないほうがかえって読みやすくなります。

・ 「推定を行った結果」を単に the result と訳していますが、これは正確さ (accuracy) という点から the results of the estimate とするほうがよいのではないでしょうか。

ここで少し話がそれますが、estimate と estimation の違いを英英辞典で調べてみましょう。 (The Random House College Dictionary)

estimate：　reckon, assess, value, evaluate, appraise
estimation：　judgement or opinion （例　文） In my estimation the boy is guilty （試　訳：　わたくしの判断では、その少年は有罪である）。

要するに、estimate にはいわゆる「見積り」という意味がありますが、estimation のほうにはそのような意味はむしろ薄れ、個人の意見とか判断という意味あいが強くなります。

話をもとにもどして、「推定を行った結果が、経済理論と矛盾していないかどうかをそれから検定することができる」という文章と「これがまさに経済理論的評価（理論的検定）である」に、最後の和文を分けて訳すこともできます。

ここでプロの翻訳の条件をまとめてみると、次のようになります。

・ to be accurate （正確であること）
・ to be intelligible （理解できること）
・ to be readable （読むにたえること）

これがなぜよくないかという理由、あるいは良否判定の基準には多分に主観的なものが入るので、いちいち理屈がつけられないことは既に述べてきました。以下にこの直訳文についてごく大雑把にコメントしてみます。

（１） individuals よりも individual men and women とする方が、読みやすいでしょう。

（２） For this reason と書く必要はないでしょう。

（３） Tend to appear というよりも、能力が違えばそういうことに違いがでてくるのは必然ですので、事実として書くほうが現実的です。すなわち、show up と書く方が的を射ています。

（４） 余分な語、したがって削除します。

（５） Therefore →　As a result

（６） プロジェクトがチームからできているというのは、言葉の使い方の間違いです。　When a project team consists of several members と直します。

（７） 和文は「開発工数」ですが、ここでは文脈からすぐに分かりますので、for development という句は不要です。

語句は以上で大体そろったので、早速、「直訳＝原文の模倣」を試みてみましょう。

このような訳文は、おそらく英語を少し勉強した人であれば、簡単にできることでしょう。

分からない語は和英辞典を引いて、あとは日本語を機械的に英語に変換していくだけの作業だからです。

筆者の考えでは、このような訳文では、プロの翻訳とは言えません。また、依頼元の最終顧客である英語国民の手に渡った場合、なんとなく拒絶されるのではないでしょうか。

ただ、「意味さえまがりなりにも通じればよい」という顧客に対してのみ、いわゆる「商品」となり得る代物です。

では、どこが悪いのか、あるいはどこを直すべきか、一緒に考えていきましょう。

・ 次のようなことが考えられる：　このような文章が出てきた場合には、直ちに、”the following are ( is ) considered ( or thought of ) としないで、実際に示されている原因はどんなことで、いくつあるかなどを調べる必要があります。本問の場合、原因として列挙されている項目は４つあります。したがって次のように書くことができます。

では、どこがどのように悪いのかというと、いちいち理由をつけて説明するのは難しいのですが、英語国民は、自然な形ではそうは言わないというだけのことです。ひとつひとつ見ていきましょう。

・前提とする：　based on
ただし、本問のような前後関係のときだけ適用できます。

・〜の問題を工学的に改善しようとするソフトウェアエンジニアリングにおけるアプローチ方法は、大きく二つに分類できる：

これを直訳してみると、

Broadly classified, there are two types of methods of approach in software engineering to improving the problems of 〜 through engineering

となりますが、これでは“英単語を使って日本語を書いただけ”のもので、不自然な英語といわざるを得ません。

第一、”improving the problems” という表現はナンセンスですし、短い語句の中に "engineering" という語が2回でてくるのもうまくありません。もちろん必要があって、あえて繰り返す場合もあるのですが、この場合は適切とは言えません。

原作者の意図をくんで翻訳してみると、例えば次のようになります。

人間は人間の言語（英語や日本語、etc.）しか理解できないのに対し、機械は0と1の羅列である機械語しか理解できません。このギャップを埋める（ bridging the gap ）ため、interface（接触点とか嵌合部分と訳せばよいのでしょうか）があります。

高級言語（正確には高級プログラム言語 high-level programming language と言われています）で書かれたプログラム（source program）はコンパイル（compile）されて、すなわち翻訳されて機械語のプログラム（object program）となります。

この翻訳のために computer （普通は処理用コンピュータと同一のもの）と compiler というプログラムを使います。問題処理の前にこの翻訳という過程が入るため「マンマシンインターフェースを犠牲にして」という表現になったのでしょう。もっと簡単な例で言うと、keyboard も man-machine interface の一つです。

・ 生産性を犠牲にして：　アセンブラ言語は、プログラム言語の中では一番機械語に近い、ということは、人間にはそれだけ抵抗があります。すなわち使いにくいということです。使いにくければ、プログラム作成の生産性が低下することになります。

・ これらを両立させることができる：　these can be made compatible と訳すことはできますが、その意味は（筆者には）抽象的で漠然としています。そこで、意味をはっきり伝えるために、和文をもう一度読み直し、原作者が何を言おうとしているかをつきとめなければなりません。しかし、このところの筆者の解釈は、訳文のなかで示すことにします。

以上でこれまでに検討してきたことを反映させずに「原文がそこにあるから、翻訳なんて簡単だよ」という態度（方針）で訳した訳例１をまず示し、次にそれを三人称的に書き直した訳例２を、そして最後に「訳文」を示します。比較検討してください。同時に「翻訳とは単に語句の変換ではない。そこには創造的な何か（+α）がある」ということがお分かりいただければ幸いです。

難しい語は一つもないので、早速 draft を作ってみます。

Because almost one month has elapsed(*1) after(*2) this system started its operation(*3) we cannot fully evaluate the contribution of the system to our company business. However, we can infer(*4) how much we have been benefited by it, with some forecast(*5).

(*1) 　文脈から one month has hardly elapsed とするほうが良い。
(*2)　after ではなく since とするのが文法的です。
(*3)　単に started だけでも良いでしょう。
(*4)　「類推」は、もちろんこう訳してもよいかもしれませんが、直訳しているという感じがします。したがって全体の意味を取って、文章を作り変えることにします。
(*5)　この句の意味は、英語国民にはすぐには伝わりません。本問のように論文調の記述の場合は、 we cannot ……のように一人称表現ではなく、 its contribution to 〜 cannot be ……というように三人称表現の方が良いです。

「ある程度の予見を含めて、類推することはできる」の中の「予見」も「類推」もそれぞれ訳語はありますが、一緒にして “rough forecasts” としてはどうでしょうか。　……, but some rough forecasts can be made のように。

・ 集積回路技術：　IC technology または、上に「最新の」とあるのでLSI technology としてもよいかもしれない。

・ 全面的に：　語句としては entirely であるが、これは使わない。

・ オフラインテスト機能：　offline test functions

・ 〜の充実を図り：　このような表現は意味をとって訳す必要がある。

・ 高信頼性：　high reliability

本問題文は、あるマニュアルのほんの一部の抜粋であるため、その意味がつかみにくいかもしれません。例えば「何の」信頼性が高くなったのか不明です。このため、次のように書きたくても、主語に当たる語が不明のため、ここをブランクにしておかなければなりません。

（１） Through full employment of the latest IC technology and repletion of offline test functions, ________ is highly reliable.

あるいはここをぼかして、
（２） High reliability is achieved through full use of the latest IC technology and complete offline test functions.

しかし、実際には前後関係からこの文章で何が主語になっているかはすぐにわかるので（本問の場合は、computer terminal と仮定してみると）次のように書くことができます。

なお、（1）の repletion of 〜というのは直訳です。ただ「軍備の充実」というときは、これを使うことができるようです。repletion of armaments というように。

【問題】次の和文を英訳してください。

（１） コンピュータは、一連の処理手順に関する人間からの指示を前もって記憶しており、計算や処理の個々の過程では、人手を介在させることなしに動作する機械といえます。

（２） プログラムはひとつひとつの命令が集まって構成されており、それぞれに命令コードが定められている。従って命令とデータは、はっきり区別できる。

（１）「人間からの指示を前もって記憶しており」というところが訳出されていません。もうひとつ「〜は・・・・・・といえます」が「〜は・・・・・です」となっています。

（２）「それぞれに命令コードが定められている」の訳で、operation code を主語にしたため、passive voice 表現になっていますが、ここでは、instruction を主語にして、Each instruction has its own operation code というように表現したほうがよいのではないでしょうか。Have動詞のようなやさしい動詞で表現できますから。

もう一つは、原文では「区別する」という動詞の主語が明記されていません。この直訳文では、それは the computer となっています。本当は、コンピュータが命令とデータを区別できるのは、operation code のためだけではないので、このようにはっきり書かないほうがよいと思います。すなわち、It is, therefore, possible to distinguish instructions form data. と書く方がよいでしょう。

【問題】次の和文を英訳してください。

音声入力
日常の人間相互の情報の交換は、音声による会話が主流であることからも分かるように、人間にとって一番抵抗の少ない情報伝達手段は音声であろう。

【解　説】

・ 音声入力：　vocal entry, voice input

・ 日常の：　daily routine となるのかもしれませんが、最初の文章を「人間は通常〜により情報を交換する」と表現する方がよいと思いますので、副詞にして normally ( or usually ) とします。なお、少し横道にそれますが「日本語が形容詞であるから、英語も形容詞として訳す」というような翻訳論は nonsense です。「意味をとって訳す」ということに徹しなければなりません。

・ 音声による会話：　spoken conversation

・ 主流：　ここでは意味をとって訳そうとしているため、すなわち、さきの「日常の」と考えわせて normally とし、また動詞も直説法・現在で事実を述べるというような形を使いますので、あえて「主流」（＝ the mainstream, the leading 〜 ）という言葉は表面には出さないようにしました。

・ 一番抵抗の少ない：　the most natural

・ 手段：　means

・ 情報伝達：　data transmission

・ 〜は・・・・であることからわかるように：　
As can be seen from the fact that 〜 is ………となるのですが、このように形式的な変換では、どうも natural English を生み出さないことが多いものです。既に書きましたが、文章の意味を良く考えて、すなわち、原文執筆者の意図を察知して、その人の心の中にあったもの ( meaning ) を表現することが、真の翻訳であると思います。

このように考えると「人間は通常音声による会話により情報を交換する、そこで ( ＝ and ) 人間にとって・・・・」と和文を書き直したとしても、原作者の意図を歪曲したことにはなりません。いや、かえって正確に表現したことになるのではないでしょうか。筆者は、翻訳とは「語句の変換ではなく、意味を object language で表現することだ」と理解しているからです。

・ 人間にとって一番抵抗の少ない情報伝達手段は音声であろう：
　Their most natural means of data transmission is the voice. でよさそうですが、このように主部が長い場合には、The voice is their most natural means of data transmission. と逆にします。（A=BはB=Aとしても、同じことですから、数学では確か交換法則 commutative law と言っています）。

なお、「人間にとって」という副詞句は、their という所有形容詞（ possessive adjective ）で表現できます。「翻訳とは語句の変換だ」と考えていては、いつまでたってもよい英文は書けません。まして「品詞までも同じように訳さなければ正しい訳ではない」などと考えていては、よい英文を書けるわけがありません。

(1) signal をform と不可算名詞に変え、data ( = information ) と同じ形にすると読みやすい。

(2) has become possible と書き直します。

(3) 文章の頭に持ってきます。 FAX = facsimile

(4) こういうときは in ではなく with が慣用的。また「どのようにしてそうするかという問題を解決する」というときには（旺文社『英和中辞典』によると） “solve the problem ( of ) how to do it” となります。

(5) it では獏として意味をつかみにくい（というより、それは、ふつう、一番近い単数名詞を受けるので、何を意味するのかわからなくなる）ので、this type of data entry とはっきり表現するほうがよい。

(6) 「・・・・・するであろう」と予想を述べているので、is probably not と英語でも、「多分」という意味の副詞を添えて表現します。

データが多様になるということは、それを処理するシステムが多様な機能を持たなくてはならないというように考えて、次の訳文は作ってあります。

【問題】次の和文を英訳してください。

さらに、16ビットのマイクロプロセッサの登場により、そのカバーする範囲は一層広がった。CPUやチャネルを形成する複雑なロジックはどんどんマイクロプログラム（ファームウェア）化され、データ処理装置の中枢部は、1チップのLSIプロセッサとLSIメモリに置き換えられる見通しが出てきた。

【解　説】

・ さらに：
Furthermore, In addition, などと訳す場合が多いですが、前のパラグラフに何が書かれているかによって変わり（いや、変えるべきで）例えば、Now などという副詞がぴったりする場合もあります。実を言うと、この問題は、「マイクロプロセッサ」の続きですので、この Now をここでは使うことにします。このように副詞一つの訳でも色々と考えなければ適訳はできません。まして、語句や文節の訳においてはなおさらです。

・ 〜登場：
the appearance (or emergence) of 〜, しかし、英文では単語を置くだけでそのものの存在や出現を imply しているので、あえてこのように書かなくとも、例えば、Now the 16-bit microprocessor と書くだけで同じような意味となります。副詞節(句)を表現するとき、名詞を主語にして同じ役目を果たすことが英文には多いのです。逆に英文和訳のときは、文頭に名詞（特に抽象名詞）があったら、これを副詞節（句）のように訳すと、今度は和文としては自然で読みやすくなります。

・ そのカバーする範囲→適用範囲：
the range of application

・ チャネル：
channel、意味としては、情報処理分野では「中央処理装置（CPU）の下請けをする制御装置」と考えて、ほぼ間違いない。

・ マイクロプログラム（ファームウェア）化：
「〜化」という表現は、本講座でしばしば取り上げてきました。ここではその考え方を繰り返すことになりますが、こういう表現を求めて辞書を引いてはいけません。意味をよく考え、その上で、自分の知っている語句を使って書くようにしてください。ここでは「〜はマイクロプログラムにどんどん（ rapidly ）取って代わられている」と言いかえれば訳しやすくなります。

ファームウェア（ firmware ）という語の意味を電波新聞社発行の『マイコン用語辞典』で調べてみると次のようになります。

（２） マイクロプログラムを記憶した制御用のROM（ Read-Only Memory ）を言う。

（３） マイクロプログラム方式のコンピュータにおいて、マイクロプログラムを制御用メモリの中に記憶させたものを言う。

（４） ハードウェアとソフトウェアの中間に位置しているものを言う。

・ データ処理装置の中枢部：
｢中枢部｣は nucleus とか the center, the pivot とか訳せるときもあるでしょうが、ここでは（ central ）processor という語を使う関係上、そういう概念は既に表せているとの判断から、上記のいずれの語も訳文では使わないことにしました。

data-processing equipment built around a one-chip LSI processor ………. と表現します。

【表　現】
3つとりあげます。

・ そのカバーする範囲は一層広がった：
〜have ( has ) further broadened the range of application.

・ CPUやチャネルを形成する複雑なロジックはどんどんマイクロプログラム（ファームウェア）化され・・・・・：

（注）CPUとchannelを形容詞として使って、「・・・・を形成する××× 」という意味を表現しました。

・〜の見通しが出て来た：

ここで本文に関して少し技術解説を加えておきます。「4-bit processor が発展して 8-bit processor になり、ついで 16-bit (32-bit, 64-bit) processor となって、一段と高性能となりうんぬん」ということは、具体的には何がそんなによくなるのでしょうか？

簡単に言えば、処理速度（処理能力＝throughput ）が向上するのです。４ビット単位の処理とは、「同時に扱えるデータが4ビットであるので、繰り返せば何ビットも扱える」ということを意味します。要はスピードの問題です。したがって、遅くてもよければ、4-bit processor でほとんどの仕事はできるのです。

[訳　文]
Now the 16-bit microprocessor has further broadened the range of application. Complex CPU and channel logic functions are rapidly being taken over by microprograms (firmware), and the prospect is in sight for data-processing equipment built around a one-chip LSI processor and LSI memory.

最初の文章の副詞節を抽象名詞に置きかえます。

Rapid progress in electronic parts, especially semiconductor devices, has given rise to a wide speed disparity between the electronic and mechanical sections of machines, ……..

これで英語らしい表現となりました。第2の文章も少し手直ししてみると、次のようになります。

……… and mechanical parts that cannot match the new pace are gradually being replaced by electronic circuitry.

少し用語を補ったり、修正したりするだけで、表現がより確かになり、英語らしくなります。
